Acorn, Bring Me Closer!

A new image editor from Flying Meat has just poked out its head!

A new image editor from Flying Meat has just poked out its head! From the site:
Acorn is a new image editor built with one goal in mind - simplicity. Fast, easy, and fluid, Acorn provides the options you'll need without any overhead. Acorn feels right, and won't drain your bank account.

I've had a working draft of a blog post called "Dropping Adobe" in my queue for a few months now. I became disheartened by Adobe after their slow transition from Mac OS 9 to Mac OS X, and again with their transition to the Intel processor Macs. I was very turned off by their acquisition of Macromedia. Not that I particularly liked Macromedia either, but I did like having an alternative.

Without getting into all the drama, I've had a bug up my butt for a while to put together a major project without using any Adobe products. I'm looking forward to playing with Acorn today. A raster image editor is a pretty important tool for building websites (at least the ones I build), and is the last tool in my arsenal that isn't provided by an indie developer.

Here's to hoping Acorn can fit the bill for me. Regardless, I applaud Gus Mueller for not feeling like he had to take on Adobe. Just the fact that he went for it is probably enough for me to buy a license. Probably. I do have a budget to think about here. I'll keep you posted on how it goes.

[Update:] Nice touch how Acorn comes before Adobe in the alphabetically sorted applications folder.
